We arrived around 5pm. Starla was at the front to greet us right away. Got to our cabin…there was a sign saying Happy Anniversary! I don’t remember telling Starla but obviously I did =) Made us feel at home! It is our 15th Wedding Anniversary and the 1st time in the Black Hills. We will be here for 8 whole days. It’s so majestic, words can not describe the beauty here. It was a long drive from Central MN (11 hours) but so far it’s been more than worth it. From this wonderful cabin, to the hot tub, to the creek, to the wonderful ATV trails….best trip yet! We’ll be back! Thanks Starla for your wonderful hospitality.

09/17/2019 - Gangestads and Hank

We spent our 2nd wedding anniversary exploring SD. Badlands, Black Hills, monuments and everything in between. Our last leg of the trip brought us here to Spearfish Canyon. Just incredible. We have enjoyed taking in the scenery all over SD - it is amazing how the terrain changes. There is something really special and peaceful about the canyon. We were so grateful to find Wickiup Village. Travelling with our yellow lab Hank - we had to find accommodations for the three of us. Wickiup/Starla/ Les were incredibly welcoming to all of us - even our fur baby. He loved this place as much as we did. This leg of the trip finally afforded us sometime to relax, decompress and disconnect. We grilled our meals, listened to the stream flow and watched the stars from the hot tub at night. Do explore the canyon - Devils Bathtub was one of my favorite hikes ever. Such a neat hike and very rewarding - DO THE SLIDE!! Plan to get wet - it is worth it, We wish we had more time here, but we know we will be back. Thanks again to Wickiup = grateful to have enjoyed this slice of heaven.

We, too, celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary here this week….right next to the creek and bridge where we got married. This was our first vacation together as a couple when we started dating so it seemed fitting to get married here and we love to come back and spend our anniversaries here too! On our wedding day Les had the boom truck out and was staining some cabins, so he took our photographer up in the boom truck for some of the photo shoots. This was our first time staying at Wickiup - Frontier Cabin and we loved it. I have been to the Black Hills many times before but this is Andy’s first time in Spearfish Canyon. As we drove through the canyon. As we drove through the canyon, he was awestruck and quiet the whole way.. The cabin was a perfect place to end our day. While we didnt get to enjoy the hot tub (down poured in the evening), I know it would have felt amazing after our many hikes through the canyon. The sounds of the creek nearby were just so calming. I’m hoping we’ll be back very soon!

We have a cabin back home in MN that we keep a journal at for every family trip. Great idea! This is our first time here. Beautiful, peaceful - the sound of the creek is amazing! We drove to Devils Tower and took the Spearfish Canyon way back so many beautiful stops along the way. One night in Sturgis then 2 nights here. off to two busy nights in Deadwood. This was the perfect peaceful getaway. It was actually very nice to have not have access to social media. Thank you for your wonderful accommodations. We hope to be back someday!

The only thing we knew of Deadwood coming here was the Doris Day movie “Calamity Jane”. We fell in live with you! From the moment we stepped into the cabin we knew we were somewhere special. Thanks to Starla we went on the most amazing hike to Devils Bathtub. Even our 9 year old Alaskan Klee Kai was like a puppy again. We got to experience Mount Moriah during a break in a hail storm and loved walking the old Deadwood Main Street. We will be back!

We just love Wickiup! Our first night was at Ten Sleep which was a darling cabin and then we were lucky enough to get Frontier for 2 nights.  What a cute cabin and oh that lovely babbling creek singing to us.  We loved the hot tub on the 2 unbelievably clear, starry, almost full moon nights.  Jackie and Les were wonderful hosts.  This place has such charm - so very relaxing and so friendly.  We will recommend Wickiup to anyone coming near the Black Hills and we sure hope to come back!

Enjoyed out 5 day stay. Les and Jackie are very nice and went out of their way to answer any of your questions and make sure our stay was awesome.  The scenic drive up HWY 14a by Roughlock Falls was absolutely gorgeous.  We ate entirely too much on this vacation, especially enjoyed the breakfast at Cheyenne Crossing.  If you don't mind a little drive, then recommend the Hwy thru Custer State Park and up Iron Horse Mtn Rd. - its breathtaking.

Great place to stay and unwind.  Kool Deadwood nights is a great place to have a drink, see your favorite old cars you cant afford and dance to live music.  Wickiup is the best place we have stayed on our trip.  Fireplace, ht tub, rushing creek. Sounds like retirement.  My beautiful wife's 49th birthday today!

Sandra and I showed up and immediately had a strong adoration with the babbling creek.  The more we unloaded the car the more endearing our surroundings became.  Was such a wonder setting up the hammock we debated on bringing.  And when we laid right next to that gushing water with the Christmas lights illuminating the tree tops at night we fell in love with this place.  Was such a pleasure playing a quiet game of cards next to the creek.  The hot tub under the half moon really helped melt away the miles from the road.  Watching the stars in the clear sky while the warm water and cool air glided over us was magical.  Thank you for the beautiful hospitality and warm smiles.  You're little dog looked like he was on top of the world and we're so happy he has a good life with you.  We're also pleased there are friendly and gracious people out there like you who love to share all this.

Les and Jackie, we have been married for 35 years, we never had a honeymoon, work always seemed to get in the way and money ALWAYS in short supply.  I now work 30 on and 30 off in Montana and have been by Wickiup cabins on a few occasions but was always on a short schedule. Well we got a long weekend so we booked a cabin.  Got Goldenwest but kinda wanted Frontier because it was back on the creek.  Someone cancelled their trip and we were able to get just what we wanted!  The quiet solitude of sitting by the creek and counting the gallons of water that rolled by was awesome.  We have always loved this area since we first came through on our way back to Montana.  Thank you for the hospitality and cozy little Frontier cabin.  We will NEVER forget this stop!
